Understanding physiotherapy

What Is Physiotherapy, and How Is It Different from Other Therapies?

If you have pain, stiffness or difficulty moving, choosing between physiotherapy, massage therapy and other healthcare services can feel confusing. Their approaches sometimes overlap, but each profession brings a different focus.

What is physiotherapy?

Physiotherapy helps restore, maintain and improve movement and physical function. Physiotherapists assess your concerns and develop a treatment plan that may include exercises, education, hands-on treatment and strategies for managing daily activities.

In Manitoba, physiotherapists must be registered with the College of Physiotherapists of Manitoba. “Physiotherapy” and “physical therapy” refer to the same profession.

How does physiotherapy compare with other fields?

FieldMain focus
PhysiotherapyAssessing movement and physical function, managing pain and supporting rehabilitation after injury, illness or surgery.
Massage therapyAssessing and treating soft tissues, including muscles and connective tissue, through hands-on techniques to support comfort, mobility and function.
Chiropractic careAssessing and treating musculoskeletal concerns, particularly involving the spine, muscles and joints. Care may include joint manipulation, soft-tissue treatment and exercise.
Occupational therapyHelping people participate in meaningful daily activities, such as dressing, working and managing home routines, including adapting tasks or environments.
KinesiologyApplying movement and exercise science to improve physical capacity, support rehabilitation and promote health and performance.

These are broad descriptions, not strict boundaries. Individual practitioners’ training and services vary, and the professions can work together.

Is physiotherapy just massage or exercise?

Physiotherapy can include both, but it starts with an assessment and a plan connected to your needs. Treatment choices depend on the findings and what you want to return to doing.

For example, someone with shoulder pain may need help rebuilding movement and strength for lifting at work. Someone recovering from surgery may need a gradual rehabilitation plan that follows their surgeon’s instructions.

Other professions also assess patients, recommend exercises and support recovery. The best fit depends on your concern and the practitioner’s relevant experience.

When might physiotherapy be a useful starting point?

Consider an assessment when pain, stiffness, weakness or balance difficulties interfere with everyday activities. You can also ask about rehabilitation after a sports injury, workplace injury, car accident or surgery.

You do not need to know the name of your condition before contacting the clinic. Explain what feels different and what has become difficult.
